In May, 2026, I started experimenting with an idea I borrowed from Ryan Gilbert, who writes the newsletter, “Workspaces,” which features the desks of designers, founders and builders.

Ryan also works for Beehiiv, and occassionally comes to my rescue when I’m desperate for help with Ward 6.

BK Workspaces is my own take on Ryan’s newsletter, as it’s a fun way to feature more people in our community. I’ll add new ones every week or so. Hope you enjoy!

  1. Kate Greathead and Teddy Wayne, married novelists (CH)

  2. Emma Dangel, style editor, Apartment Therapy (CH)

  3. Jill Gould, director and founder, The Soundcheck Diaries (CH)

BK WORKSPACES: KATE GREATHEAD AND TEDDY WAYNE, novelists

Teddy (L), Kate (R)

Did you always want to be a writer?

Teddy: “Yes, since third grade, then more seriously in high school. I was always an avid reader; as I’ve gotten older, I’ve enjoyed more and more sitting down and creating something fully within my control with words.”

Kate: She always loved stories, but she wasn’t one of those kids who knew from a young age she wanted to be a writer.  “I was not a together and ambitious kid.”

Writing routine?

They both write as soon as the kids are in school, Teddy in the bedroom and Kate on the couch or any soft, quiet place, even a dank basement. “Any snippets on time that fall into my lap,” including weekends.

BK WORKSPACES, EMMA DANGEL, Apartment Therapy

This week’s Ward 6 workspace belongs to Apartment Therapy Style Editor, Emma Dangel

What are two recent trends your writers discovered that most of us have never heard of?

Peekaboo Paint: The Sneaky Way Designers Add Color to a Room: “Think: the inside of a closet, the back of a bookshelf, or even the slim edge of a door frame that flashes color when it swings open.” (Erica Finamore, AT).

The Unexpected Historical Trend: “Designers are increasingly pulling inspiration from an unexpected era and place: the Middle Ages.” (Erica Finamore, AT)

BK WORKSPACES: ZACH HETRICK, photographer

Inspired by Workspaces.

This week’s BK WORKSPACE belongs to Columbia Street Waterfront’s Zach Hetrick, a commercial/sports photographer, runner, and parent-extraordinaire, for his efforts, along with those of his neighbors, in convincing NYC to open a newly renovated yet unused Pre-K school. Some of you might remember his fabulous social videos as part of the neighborhood’s lobbying campaign.

Do you have another campaign/fight in you? “Always down for a challenge, but love ones that are so clear cut that it’s impossible to defend and argue against!”

I just learned you have a unique specialty as a photographer… I came to NYC, and started racing subway trains while also documenting them. I would jump out of a subway car, run upstairs, and go to the next stop. I’d win if I beat the train or got back on it. That led to work with Nike and other brands. I specialize in physically running with a camera, capturing images on runs, amongst other regular commercial work.

BK WORKSPACES: JILL GOULD, Soundcheck Diaries

This week’s BK Workspaces belongs to Jill Gould, a 20-year resident of Cobble Hill, founder of JillGo Productions and co-creator and director of The Soundcheck Diaries: Touring Tales, Truths & Teachings with Nitebob and Rich Nesin, tqo veteran tour managers and sound engineers who’ve spent the last half century on the road with legendary bands Steely Dan, KISS, REM, and Aerosmith, among many.

What Is The Soundtrack Diaries? We make these into micro-music documentaries that tell the stories of past artists and how they influenced the next generations. Nitebob and Rich Nesin have amazing stories and knowledge about the live music industry that they are now imparting to the world. We premiered in September 2025, and we continue to grow.

What is your favorite band/musician? Gosh. There are so many bands and musicians who I love. But Prince is one of my all time favorite artists.

You can find Soundtrack Diaries on YouTube, IG and TikTok you want to learn more about roadies: NYT

BK WORKSPACES: NATHANAEL GREENE, NRDC

Meet Nathanael Greene, senior renewable energy advocate at the Natural Resources Defense Council, a 16-year resident of Carroll Gardens and the son of Susanne Greene, the inspiration for the hot new Williamsburg restaurant and raw bar, Cafe Susanne and Bar Susanne. One of the restaurant’s owners worked with Greene’s mom and dad during the summers, helping run their B&B.

Where did you get the wobbly giving you the finger?

The wobbly was a gift for my 50th birthday from my friend Alex Smith, who said that he saw it and thought of me, which I take as flattery.

How do you feel about your mom being the inspiration for a hip Williamsburg restaurant?

I love it. Of course, she’d be mortified, but I think she’d secretly love it too, and she’d definitely be deeply moved by the love and artistry behind it [Susanne was an artist].
