Hey neighbors -

Sorry for the delay in posting Ward 6 #10, but I had an unforeseen, last-minute trip that was all-consuming, and I was unable to work. However, I do want to share a few important meetings happening this week, some restaurant news you will definitely want to read, and a surprise from the New York Times Real Estate section (no, not the Lily Allen / David Harbour brownstone listing, though, I must admit I’ve gone down a few rabbit holes).

Please don’t forget to share Ward 6 with your friends and neighbors.

HEY NEIGHBORS - EAST ONE’S REINVENTION AND COLONIE JOINS PIPS

Just in case you missed it, both Alexa of Court St. Journal and Andrea of Strong Buzz–two local newsletter writers– have some must-read stories this week. First, the good news.

If you were a fan of East One, you’ll be happy to hear that Selina Ulrich, a former employee of the Carroll Gardens’ favorite that closed earlier this year, is opening High Beam in Red Hook at the end of November, a few doors down from Bar Mario. Ulrich also has plans for a location on Court St. Read all about it here.

And now for the bad news.

“It’s a sad day for Brooklyn Restaurants,” writes Andrea Strong in her newsletter, Strong Buzz this week about the closing of Colonie on Atlantic Ave. You have a few weeks to enjoy and meal and say goodbye.

“We remain so passionate about this business, but our leases are up and with the rising costs of doing business these days, and changing dining trends since the pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors. It’s been such an incredible journey - 15 years in Brooklyn Heights and 14 years in DUMBO. We feel very grateful for an amazing run,” Elise wrote to me this morning.

HEY NEIGHBORS - HEAR WHAT OUR BAD-ARSE FEMALE ELECTEDS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT OUR BROOKLYN WATERFRONT

If you are interested in learning more about the Brooklyn waterfront development proposals, or need an update, or are confused about where things stand or have no idea what I’m talking about, but love the East River, THIS IS THE COMMUNITY FORUM TO ATTEND.

  • On Monday, please join Ward 6 and our hosts, a bad-arse group of female electeds from Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Red Hook – Assemblymembers Jo Anne Simon & Marcela Mitaynes, and Council Members Alexa Avilés & Shahana Hanif.  Voices of the Waterfront and the Columbia St. Waterfront Association are also sponsors.

  • They will explain how you can get the City to listen to your concerns or address outstanding questions about any and all of it. For example, the insane, almost non-stop traffic on Columbia St, how 20K more people can fit in our n’hoods, resiliency/flooding, why build fancy apartments when we need affordable (think teachers, service workers, librarians, fire fighters, nurses, janitors, you get the picture) ones, river access, environmental contamination, and public transportation (there is none sans the B61). So many critical questions with not many satisfying answers. Oh, and maybe they will have some insight as to how our mayor-elect feels about developing our waterfront for luxury housing.

RSVP here for Monday, November 17, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Cabrini Hall of Sacred Hearts Church, 125 Summit St, Brooklyn (enter on Hicks).

HEY NEIGHBOR - DID WARD 6 SCOOP THE PAPER OF RECORD?

(left Ward 6’s version + cute Hudson and the NYT Real Estate cover today)

I am not the first to write about the NYC quandary of dog vs. vegetation, nor am I the last. But, I was pleasantly surprised to see the New York Times article today that was more or less a version of my story. Given, I am the solo journalist behind Ward 6, I’m especially proud of my version (with help from Hudson, the dog), given the Times has an entire photo department and reporting team for its Real Estate section. If you would like to read my local version that I published weeks ago, Louis Cox, the Cobble Hill Association’s “tree guy” provides essential info for dog owners and plant lovers. A good refresh, given we have so little green space for our dogs and our plants, as they both have needs.

HEY NEIGHBORS - YES, ONE MORE MEETING!

Nov. 20 | Cobble Hill Association fall meeting. RSVP. 6 - 8PM

That’s all I have time for this week. See you next Saturday with my long overdue interview with the co-founders of the Shiny Sparkle Labs and Studio in Red Hook.
